President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday about personally testifying during the impeachment hearings, writing, "Even though I did nothing wrong, and don’t like giving credibility to this No Due Process Hoax, I like the idea & will, in order to get Congress focused again, strongly consider it."
WGBH News Political Reporter Adam Reilly and Joanna Weiss of Experience Magazine joined Boston Public Radio on Monday to discuss if the public should take Trump's tweeted response seriously.
"I don't take it particularly seriously. It's a nice way for him to get all of us to pay attention to him in the moment and then to take attention away from the people who are testifying as the week goes on," Reilly said. "He likes to be the center of attention, this is very much in keeping with that affinity and I'd be stunned if he actually testified."
Weiss attributed Trump's impeachment response to his quick reactions on social media.
"It's also in keeping with him watching live TV and just reacting to it with his thumbs and fingers," she said. "He usually makes these reactions without legal counsel at his side, and so I suspect that when he discusses it, if he does, and listens to his White House team, they might have something else to say."
