Snow will come, and snow will go — unless you’re in Eastern Massachusetts, in which case the snow probably won’t show up at all.

The areas around Fitchburg, Leominster and on west to the Berkshires could get the first flakes of the season Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, GBH meteorologist Dave Epstein said. But don’t expect much accumulation.

“This is a non-event in terms of snow,” Epstein said on Morning Edition. “There might be a coating to an inch or two in the middle of the night, but it's going to be the 40s tomorrow. So if you get up at 8 or 9 a.m., it may actually be gone, whatever fell and it's going to mainly stick on the grass.”

In other areas of the state, expect rain, Epstein said. The sun will rise around 6:36 a.m.

“I think the commute tomorrow morning, it's definitely going to be slower because of the rain,” he said. “It's dark, of course. The sun's coming up later and later. So we have to contend with that.”

Then the system will clear out of the region.

“The rain comes to an end tomorrow morning between about 10 a.m. and noon, and then it's clearing up for Thursday and Friday,” Epstein said. “We're only in the mid-40s. And over the weekend we're in the low 40s. Much colder weather, but dry.”

Temperatures will likely fluctuate for the next few weeks, Epstein said, but more 70-degree days are not likely. That means it’s time to say goodbye to outdoor summer plants and gardens, he said.

People in the Boston area may have noticed a bit of frost on the ground Tuesday morning, despite slightly above-freezing temperatures recorded in the area.

“Temperatures are taken five feet above the ground,” Epstein said. “So when it's above freezing at thermometer level, it's often below freezing at the ground.”
