In June, Democrats in Congres staged a sit-in on the floor of the House to demand action on gun control reform. More than twenty hours later, the sit-in adjourned without a vote. The House adjourned for the summer, leaving its members to return to their home districts empty-handed.
But now that Congress is back in session, those Democrats may have to face the wrath of House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is considering formally punishing participating members for breaking the chamber's rules. According to CNN, potential punishments may include leveling fines or passing a resolutioncondemningthe sit-in.
Speculating on what kind of punishment Ryan would impose, Congressman Richard Neal quipped, "Make [us] go sit in the corner or something."
"I don't really think there's much he can do," Neal continued. "There is a proposal that he was going to seek a formal censure, and I think that would be ill-considered."
Neal vowed to continue the fight for gun control reform in the House's upcoming session.
"We have to continue to ask for what I think is a minimal requirement, which is mental health background checks," Neal said.
