In the 1950s, drive-in movies were the perfect date-night destination, and there were about 4,000 of them across the country. But as old-fashioned 35-millimeter film gave way to digital files, the outdoor movie theaters began to dwindle. Today, only about 350 remain, with 18 of them in New England.

One of them is the Mendon Twin Drive-In, bought in March by the brothers behind the TV show " Phantom Gourmet." Dan and Dave Andelman opened the 60-year-old theater for business in April.
