Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has scheduled prostate surgery, the latest among health issues that have included a bone fracture and respiratory infection.

Spokeswoman Dorothy Joyce said in an email Monday the surgery scheduled for Friday at Brigham and Women's Hospital is intended to correct a "very common issue among men of his age." She said the surgery is elective and will require a few days in the hospital and recovery at home.

The mayor's office confirmed the surgery for an enlarged prostate.
