People are posting online solicitations to give seniors free rides to Massachusetts vaccination sites in exchange for their own appointment, and in some cases, offering payment or free lunch to tag along.

Gov. Charlie Baker announced a new initiative Wednesday aimed at getting more eligible seniors vaccinated. Massachusetts will now allow those who accompany someone age 75 or older to get a COVID-19 shot at a mass vaccination site to get an appointment as well.

Baker said Thursday he heard “disturbing reports” of people trying to accompany seniors in exchange for a vaccine appointment. He encouraged seniors to only let someone they trust assist them through the vaccination process.

“Don’t take calls or offers from people you don’t know well or trust and never share your personal information with anyone,” Baker said. “If you’re contacted by somebody soliciting to take you to a site, please report it to the authorities.”

On Twitter, travel blogger Eileen Cotter Wright posted her offer to drive a senior — a deal that included a free meal.

“I’m more than happy to drive you to and from your vaccine appointment if you’re over 75, lunch is on me! #boston #COVIDVaccine #Massachusetts”

The 35-year-old Cotter Wright, who is from Quincy, said she recently gave birth to a baby and has hardly left her house since she was pregnant. When she heard of the vaccine companion program, she thought it was a good opportunity to offer her help.

“I’m more than happy to offer them a car with heated seats and a free lunch and whatever else I can offer,” she said. “A chat, some company, I'll stand out in line at Gillette, whatever they need because I also want more seniors to get vaccinated.”

She said she hoped people are not trying to take advantage of seniors and that it would be “awful” if that were the intentions of some online posters.

“It is kind of a weird loophole in my opinion,” Cotter Wright said, “especially because I know a lot of people are pretty eager to get vaccinated. It's an interesting tactic for them to take.”

On Craigslist, there are dozens of postings from people offering to give free rides, or in some cases, pay the seniors for letting them tag along to vaccine appointments.

One Craigslist user, who alleged they are “mom of two daughters and a teacher” posted an offer to escort a senior in Northampton. That listing was later taken down.

“Free: I will help anyone 75 and older make their vaccine appointment and give them a free ride to it,” the user wrote. “I have a clean car and I wear an n95 mask at all times. No charge.”

Another poster from the Boston area wrote they would be willing to pay $275 to help someone get vaccinated.

“As I would be helping someone; I too would be getting the vaccine,” the person wrote. “I have a car, I’m 27yr old male, and happy to help anyone!”

A post from the Greenfield area offered to drive two people to an appointment at the same in exchange for $100 paid to each senior.

“We bring both you and your partner — earn 200 in one day for having us bring you to get vaccinated -ideally we do both at same time,” the posting reads.

Some are offering to also help seniors schedule their vaccine appointments online — a process that requires the use of sensitive information such as a government issued ID or driver's license.

“Hello, I am a responsible 30 year old male and would be happy to help any MA resident 75+ to schedule their COVID-19 vaccine,” one user posted. “I will schedule the vaccine for you and drive you to the vaccination site. This will allow me to get the vaccine at the same time. Happy to help anyone 75+ who needs help setting up the appointment and ride.”

Those eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination can use the state’s new appointment finder search tool, available at vaxfinder.mass.gov and through mass.gov/covid-19-vaccine.
