Gov. Charlie Baker will deliver a commencement address for Class of 2020 high school graduates across the state in a collaboration with WGBH.

The June 9 event — including appearances by the Patriots' Devin McCourty, actor Steve Carell and other celebrities with local ties — will be broadcast on WGBH and partner station WGBY/New England Public Media in western Mass., and will be shared with other TV stations across the state.

Students from around the commonwealth will also be delivering valedictory speeches during the event.

In a statement issued jointly with WGBH, Baker said Friday "Graduation ceremonies are important milestones in a young person’s life that deserve to be celebrated. While we cannot gather in the traditional way, we want to recognize, celebrate and salute Massachusetts’ Class of 2020 for their accomplishments and their resiliency during these difficult times."

WGBH partnered with the Baker administration this spring to provide distance-learning materials for students once schools were shuttered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
