An informal group of legal organizations plan to file a formal complaint with the Massachusetts Commission on Judicial Conduct against Boston Municipal Judge Richard Sinnott, according to Church's law partner and husband Derege Demissie.

Sinnott on Wednesday ordered attorney Susan Church held in contempt for arguing with him over the judge’s refusal to dismiss charges against her client, Lilly Antoinette, 29, who was among those arrested for protesting the self-described "Straight Pride" Parade. Church, a nationally known attorney, was handcuffed, hauled out of court and held for several hours.

Attorneys led by Church's law firm, Demisse and Church of Cambridge, have joined with the National Lawyers Guild, the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights to file the complaint with the Commission, which was established to investigate judicial misconduct.

One defense lawyer compared Sinnott's actions Wednesday to those of Judge Julias Hoffmann, famous for gagging a defendant during the Chicago Seven trial of 1969.
