Awards season officially kicked off Sunday when NBC aired 77th Annual Golden Globes Award. Highlights of the evening included Sam Mendes winning for the epic war film “1917” and Joaquin Phoenix netting a Golden Globe for best actor for his depiction of the Batman villain The Joker.

Media scholar Bob Thompson joined Boston Public Radio on Monday to talk about the show and who he said was its' one loser, host Ricky Gervais.

“It was a pretty lame evening for Ricky Gervais,” Thompson said.

Thompson is the founding director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture and a Trustee Professor of Television and Popular Culture at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
