When Joe Mathieu was a kid, he wanted a ride in a fighter jet. He wrote to local Air Force bases to ask if he could tag along for a ride, but he was told such rides were reserved for members of the media.

So Mathieu became a journalist. And now, more than 20 years later, he is joining the WGBH News team.

Starting August 10, Mathieu will host WGBH’s Morning Edition.

Mathieu will be taking over for Bob Seay, who has hosted Morning Edition for seven years and will now shift his focus to reporting and writing.

Mathieu joins WGBH from WBZ, where he spent seven years as a morning news anchor and reporter. He previously worked as a program director at Sirius XM and as managing editor and anchor for CBS MarketWatch.

As for that airplane ride? He finally got one, even though he never became a fighter pilot.
