A BBC radio station in Nottinghamshire, England is serving up something special for their breakfast listeners this week. BBC Radio Nottingham’s Sarah Julian is following in the footsteps of the original Pilgrim Fathers who set sail on the Mayflower some 400 years ago with a series of live programs broadcast from Massachusetts. The first broadcast, on Sept. 11, was in Provincetown, Cape Cod - the first place the Pilgrims landed. WGBH News’ Bob Seay was there early Monday morning when Sarah began her broadcast from the Pilgrim Monument and Museum.
The trip is the final chapter in BBC Radio Nottingham’s quest to reclaim the story of the Pilgrim Fathers, who originated in the Nottinghamshire village of Scrooby. Sarah is travelling to the other side of the world to tell the other side of the story of Nottinghamshire’s pilgrims who made the successful voyage, and will hear from their many descendants based in America. The visit also coincides with the annual get together of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants in Plymouth. BBC Nottingham is broadcasting live from Plymouth in the early morning hours of Sept. 12 and 13.
