Bob Childs And Childsplay: The End Of An Era

The violin and/or fiddle is ubiquitous through so many genres of music around the world. Arlington resident Bob Childs has been making fiddles for over 40 years, a career now coming to an end with his pending retirement.

The group Childsplay, which was formed to celebrate and pay tribute to this fine craftsman, is also calling it quits. On Sunday, November 24, the group will finish up with two special concerts at the Sanders Theatre in Cambridge.

I recently visited with Childs at his shop in Arlington, and also with fiddler Hanneke Cassel—who plays a Childs fiddle—at a coffee shop in Somerville where she now lives.

This radio documentary explores those conversations, what we found out, and the individuals Childsplay has touched over the years and the music they have created.
