The Supreme Court last week voted to allow a controversial Trump administration asylum rule to take effect after California courts imposed an injunction.
The rule would prevent those seeking asylum on the southern border from receiving asylum in the United States if they hadn't already sought asylum in a “safe third country” they traveled through on their way to the United States.
Ali Noorani, the executive director of the National Immigration Forum, told Boston Public Radio Monday that this rule could practically end the ability to seek asylum in the the U.S. in a timely manner for anyone traveling through Central America.
"This is part of the ongoing strategy by the Trump administration really to end our asylum system, point blank," Noorani said.
Noorani's latest book is "There Goes the Neighborhood: How Communities Overcome Prejudice and Meet the Challenge of American Immigration."
