Trump Plays Softball With Saudi Arabia After Journalist’s Death
Audio recordings described by Turkish officials now appear to confirm the worst fears about the fate of journalist Jamal Khashoggi: that he was tortured and killed just minutes after entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey earlier this month. It seems reasonable to expect that U.S. leaders would react to this case with some alarm, given the fact that Khashoggi was a U.S. resident. But, President Donald Trump has played softball with the Saudis since the story broke, taking their claims of innocence at face value. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also had a friendly photo-op with crown prince Mohammed bin Salman this week, and said today that he thought the Saudis should be given “a few more days” to complete their so-called investigation into the very crimes that they stand accused of committing.
