Journalist and author Michael Pollan is probably best known for his books “Cooked,” “Food Rules” and “In Defense of Food” — and the science of eating has always been standard fare.

But in his latest book, he takes on the science behind edibles of a very different variety — hallucinogens, and their many benefits.
