Explorers are taking a fresh look at the wreck of the Andrea Doria, nearly six decades after 46 people on the Italian luxury liner died when it sank off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Everett, Washington-based OceanGate will use a five-person submarine next month to get high-definition video and 3-D sonar images of the shipwreck. It's the first manned submersible expedition to the wreck in 20 years.
The Andrea Doria was headed to New York when it collided with the Swedish ship Stockholm on a foggy night in July 1956. Five people on the Stockholm also died.
Sixteen scuba divers have perished exploring the wreck, including one last year.
OceanGate says the findings could be applied in studies of other shipwrecks.
