When Oscar nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards were announced, many took grievance with the fact that the nominees in major categories, such as best director and best actor, were predominantly white and male. In the category for best director, no female directors were nominated. Meanwhile, every nominee in the category for best supporting actor is white.

Callie Crossley, the host of Under the Radar with Callie Crossley, said the nominees were disheartening.

“There were a lot of other fine performances [from people of color] that other people in the community, I’m not even talking about those of us outside of the community … pointed out all along,” Crossley said during an interview with Boston Public Radio on Friday. “It’s really disheartening when you know you’ve done really fine work ... and then you get to this award thing and it’s sort of back to the traditionalists or following some stereotypical lines.”
