Nobody could have imagined it happening in a segregated town in the late 60’s. How could a scrappy team of black kids, literally from the other side of the Columbus, OH, tracks, beat some of the best and richest white teams in the state? But the East High Tigers turned adversity into advantage on the basketball court and on the baseball diamond and made history. Wil Haygood went home to Ohio to gather their tales of triumph during the pivotal year when Ohio became “Tigerland.” Haygood is currently a visiting distinguished professor in the Department of Media, Journalism, and Film at Miami University in Ohio, following a 3 decade career as a journalist both at the Washington Post and the Boston Globe. His other seven books include, “The Butler: A Witness to History” which was also made into a movie. “Tigerland” is our November selection for “Bookmarked: The Under the Radar Book Club.”
