Most people know him as Mr. Sulu from the television show Star Trek, but you don’t need to be a Trekkie to know George Takei from his most recent incarnation — as a social media superstar, Trump critic and rabble rouser. And now, fans are learning more about the real life journey that shaped Takei’s activism — a journey that included a childhood spent in a Japanese-American internment camp during World War II. His story is now the inspiration behind a musical called “Allegiance,” which focuses on the lives of a family, who like Takei’s own, were uprooted from their home after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
