A new digestive health treatment facility in Boston has a personal connection to the head of one of Boston’s sports teams.

The Marlene Neely Center for Digestive Health opened earlier this month at Tufts Medical Center. Named for the late mother of Boston Bruins President Cam Neely, the new facility will provide cancer screen tests, like endoscopies and colonoscopies, as well as other GI procedures.

“Everybody has been touched by cancer in one way, shape or form, and that’s what happened to my family. Both my parents were diagnosed with cancer within months of each other," Neely told Greater Boston in an interview Wednesday. "Unfortunately, they both lost their lives with the battle of cancer, so I felt that there was a need to help cancer patients and their families."

Neely’s organization, The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer, helped fund the new facility in part with a $1.5 million donation. Now more than 20 years old, the organization has been raising money to provide services for cancer patients.

The former hockey star appeared on Greater Boston with his wife, Paulina Neely, who said while the surgical unit is still being worked on, the clinical space is ready to receive patients.
