Massachusetts is doing its part to help aid Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria barreled through the island more than two weeks ago.

The Boston Foundation, a local nonprofit philanthropy organization in Greater Boston, is administering money collected through the Massachusetts United for Puerto Rico Fund. Keith Mahoney is vice president of communications and public affairs at the Boston Foundation. He says the fund has collected more than $850,000 so far and is expecting to reach its goal of $1 million.

"What's impressive is the number of transactions we have," said Mahoney. There have been more than 1,100 donations.

Mahoney says they expect to begin releasing funds today. Major corporations and institutions around the state are participating in raising funds, and individuals are launching pledge drives.

Later today, members of an advisory committee of Puerto Rican community leaders in Massachusetts will meet to discuss the best strategies for administering aid to nonprofits on the island.

The Boston Foundation has been an underwriter of 89-7 WGBH.
