I helped make a new state law to commemorate Sept. 11, 2001. When my classmates and I were on a field trip to the Massachusetts State House, we learned how to make a law. Because our state has the "Right to Free Petition," anyone can take an idea to their state senator or representative.

girl shaking hands with woman senatorI went to my state senator and told her I wanted to propose a bill called "Unity Day." The bill went before a legislative committee and my classmates and I testified. The committee sent the bill to the House and Senate and they both approved it. It takes a long time and you have to be patient. The governor signed the bill into law that requires that a public announcement be made every year on Sept. 11 to encourage citizens to promote peace, unity, and social action.
