Let's ZOOM Into Action!

I helped make a new state law to commemorate Sept. 11, 2001. When my classmates and I were on a field trip to the Massachusetts State House, we learned how to make a law. Because our state has the "Right to Free Petition," anyone can take an idea to their state senator or representative.
I went to my state senator and told her I wanted to propose a bill called "Unity Day." The bill went before a legislative committee and my classmates and I testified. The committee sent the bill to the House and Senate and they both approved it. It takes a long time and you have to be patient. The governor signed the bill into law that requires that a public announcement be made every year on Sept. 11 to encourage citizens to promote peace, unity, and social action.
