GO STRAIGHT TO THE ART
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA)
By WGBHArts

Hannah Burr, a teaching artist at the Museum of Fine Arts, remarks on the influence of the individual on art:

"I've been working with a blind painter for about 12 years, tutoring him on technique, composition and color theory, while helping him strategize and execute the painting compositions he describes to me (he does all the actual painting).  This is a unique art experience because it involves an evolving relationship that has furthered my interest in the value of discussing what is different in what we see… I care about the question, If we're in the same room at the same time, are we having the same experience? I explore what's fleeting and overlooked, for instance a look, a nod, a comment, a gesture, or sound."

The Community Arts Initiative allows the Museum of Fine Arts to serve as an art and cultural resource within its immediate neighborhood and surrounding communities. A collaboration between the MFA, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA), and eight Boston area afterschool community organizations, it seeks to introduce young people to the MFA’s collections and the art-making process.

Under the guidance of artist Hannah Burr, students responded to works from the MFA’s collection with the exhibition Fresh Eyes. Through their drawings, audio recordings, and transcriptions, students demonstrated how personal and infinitely varied responses to art can be. Burr presents the students’ theories, questions, declarations, and descriptions in a layered, dynamic system of color-coded, visually delightful patterns made to draw in visitors. The exhibition will be on view at the MFA through September 16, 2012. The Community Arts Initiative is generously supported by the Linde Family Foundation.
