Johnny HodgesJazz with Eric in the Evening
Host Eric Jackson shines the Monday night spotlight on alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges. Born July 25, 1907, in Cambridge, Mass., Hodges spent 38 years as the lead player in Ellington's saxophone section. He left the band in 1951 to lead his own group, but returned in 1955, shortly before Ellington's legendary performance at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival. Ellington said of Hodges at his funeral on May 11, 1970, "Never the world's most highly animated showman or greatest stage personality, but a tone so beautiful it sometimes brought tears to the eyes — this was Johnny Hodges. This is Johnny Hodges."

Thelonious MonkJazz from Studio Four
Thelonious Monk (born Oct. 10, 1917, in Rocky Mount, N.C.) was one of the great geniuses of jazz composition and piano. Monk was often misunderstood and overlooked during his early career because of his unusual rhythmic technique and personal appearance. In the late 1950s, critics and fans embraced Monk's greatness as the jazz public began searching for a new approach.

Phil WoodsJazz with Eric in the Evening
Host Eric Jackson shines the Monday night spotlight on alto saxophonist Phil Woods (born Nov. 2, 1931, in Springfield, Mass.). Nicknamed "the new Bird" by his contemporaries, Woods, who has been crafting his signature style since the 1950s, is known as one of the architects of bebop. Woods has played with the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, Buddy Rich, and Benny Goodman. In the 1980s, Woods played saxophone on the Billy Joel single "Just the Way You Are."

Avery SharpeJazz with Eric in the Evening
Host Eric Jackson welcomes the Avery Sharpe Trio to WGBH's Fraser Performance Studio for a LIVE performance. On his new album, bassist Sharpe (shown) pays tribute to jazz legends McCoy Tyner, Archie Shepp, and Yusef Lateef. Tune in to hear Sharpe's trio playing tunes from his new album as well as some old favorites.

Bobby WatsonJazz with Eric in the Evening
Host Eric Jackson shines the Monday Night Spotlight on saxophonist Bobby Watson (born Aug. 23, 1953 in Lawrence, Kan.). From his work as musical director of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, to his efforts as a founding member of 29th Street Saxophone Quartet, Watson has been a force on saxophone for more than 30 years.

Jimmy HeathSaxophonist, composer and bandleader Jimmy Heath (born Oct. 25, 1926, in Philadelphia) turns 82 tomorrow. He has made a wealth of lasting music alongside his brothers, bassist Percy and drummer Albert, as well as Chet Baker, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis. In this episode, we hear some of Heath's best.
