The excellent introduction gives an overview of Romani history. A more detailed historical timeline runs through the entire book. Dr. Ian Hancock is Professor of Romani Studies at the University of Texas at Austin."Rom (Gypsy) Music" by Carol Silverman, an article in the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (1999).

Gypsy Folktales, collected and edited by Diane Tong, Harcourt Brace, 1989. A thoroughly enjoyable collection of Gypsy folktales from Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Greece, England, the United States, and many other countries.
The Gypsies by Jan Yoors, Simon & Schuster, 1967. The memoir of a Belgian man who, at the age of 12, ran away with a group of Gypsies of the Lowara tribe. He was adopted by the head of the group and his wife, and lived with them off and on for 10 years. Yoors was the son of an artist, and his words paint vivid pictures of the world of these Roma in the years before World War II.
