Romani (Gypsy) Voices

The Roads of the Roma by Ian Hancock, Siobhan Dowd and Rajko Djuric, eds., PEN American Center, 1998. A wonderful collection of poetry by contemporary Romani poets living all over the world. The excellent introduction gives an overview of Romani history. A more detailed historical timeline runs through the entire book. Dr. Ian Hancock is Professor of Romani Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

"Rom (Gypsy) Music" by Carol Silverman, an article in the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (1999).

"Persecution and Politicization: Roma (Gypsies) of Eastern Europe" by Carol Silverman, an article in the Cultural Survival Quarterly, Summer 1995.

Gypsies of the World: A Journey into the Hidden World of Gypsy Life and Culture by Nebojsa Tomasevic and Rajko Djuric, Henry Holt, 1998.

Gypsy Folktales, collected and edited by Diane Tong, Harcourt Brace, 1989. A thoroughly enjoyable collection of Gypsy folktales from Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Greece, England, the United States, and many other countries.

The Gypsies by Jan Yoors, Simon & Schuster, 1967. The memoir of a Belgian man who, at the age of 12, ran away with a group of Gypsies of the Lowara tribe. He was adopted by the head of the group and his wife, and lived with them off and on for 10 years. Yoors was the son of an artist, and his words paint vivid pictures of the world of these Roma in the years before World War II.

Patrin Web Journal An exceptional site, put together by Roma, with articles on every aspect of Romani life and culture, from history to language, from traditional occupations and customs to current social issues.

Romani.org An extensive website created by Roma, with a wealth of materials well worth exploring.
