Program - Exile

The Oxford Book of Exile edited by John Simpson (Oxford University Press, 1995). A reference book of a sort, is a compilation of many perspectives on exile from many writers the world over, spanning millennia. It is divided into seven sections taking the reader from perspecitves on being driven out, to the experience of exile, to the end of exile and returning home. The book contains many famous exiles from history and literature, as well as those never before heard of.

The Word Behind Bars and the Paradox of Exile edited by Kofi Anyidoho (Northwestern University press, 1997). This book sprang from a workshop held at Northwestern University in 1994 at which a group of exiled African writers met and shared their experiences. Jack Mapanje, Micere Githae Mugo, Abena P.A. Busia and others explore their exile experiences through poetry, prose, essay, and political cartoons. These collected works are valuable in terms of providing a variety of African views on the painful phenomenon of exile.

The Jew in the Lotus: A Poet's Rediscovery of Jewish Identity in Buddhist India by Rodger Kamenetz (HarperSanFrancisco, 1994) A fascinating book, it chronicles part of the religious dialog between Judaism and Tibetan Buddhism. It is the source of the Dalai Lama's questions about "the secret of Jewish spiritual survival in exile."

Freedom In Exile: The Autobiography of the Dalai Lama by Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet (HarperPerrenial, 1990) The Dalai Lama offers the story of his life, his childhood and recognition as the Dalai Lama, the Chinese invasion of Tibet and his escape into exile, and of his hopes and fears as world religious leader.

The Man Without A Country by Edward Everett Hale (Platt & Peck Co., 1910) Written during the American Civil War this story of a young United States Army Lieutenant who cursed his country and was condemned to perpetual exile at sea, caught the nation's imagination and has stirred patriotic feelings for generations. (You'll probably have to find it in a public library.)
