Greater Boston Arts is a series of monthly programs devoted exclusively to the wealth of artistic creation in Massachusetts. Shot entirely on location, the series canvasses the extraordinary diversity of the area's local culture, from major museum to rehearsal hall, from community arts center to downtown theater district. Greater Boston Arts combs the region for stories that are important, unusual, and immediate. The series' central goal is to build audiences for the arts. Every segment, regardless of topic or approach, directs viewers to a cultural event that is currently happening in the Boston area and beyond.
Each month, Greater Boston Arts features three seven- to ten-minute stories as well as several shorter calendar segments. Program elements are unified by original graphics that meld the elegance of New England's traditions with the currency of cutting-edge creative work.
As it promotes local culture, Greater Boston Arts also participates in it. Each feature is produced by a different independent filmmaker, drawing on the deep talent pool of the local production community. WGBH has had the privilege to enjoy the services of some of the Boston area's best talent, ranging from acclaimed veteran filmmakers such as Ross McElwee (Sherman's March) and Steve Ascher and Jeanne Jordan (Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern) to younger producers such as Joshua Seftel (Taking on the Kennedys) and Ellie Lee (Repetition Compulsion). The series staff seeks producers with distinctive vision. As a result, each story bears the signature stamp of the person who produced it.
Greater Boston Arts is becoming a public television staple, a forum as comprehensive and serious as those dedicated to public affairs, history, and science. In the 2000-2001 season, Greater Boston Arts expects to further strengthen its role as formidable advocate for the arts in the local community.
