The Circle of Ten.
Local Businesses and Organizations committed to Local Programming.

This year WCAI will produce even more original programming, thanks to special funding from The Circle of Ten. Ten locally owned businesses who value WCAI’s mission to educate, entertain and inspire listeners on the Cape, Islands, and Southcoast. We’ll be delving into the issues, events and personal stories that make our region unique. Stay tuned all year for locally produced programming, made possible by ten community-minded local businesses.

We are grateful to all of our business sponsors and to our listeners, whose contributions fund our operating expenses and the annual dues we pay for national programming. The additional funding, provided by The Circle of Ten allows us to further serve our local community.

This year WCAI local programming initiatives include:

“Cape Change,” a 5-part series, Winter 2012
Here on Cape Cod, the Islands and the Southcoast, the signs of climate change are all around us every day, if you just know where to look. We’ll explore the impacts of climate change on our region’s culture and economy, and take a look at what state and local officials are doing to reduce or prepare for climate change.

“Local Lives”, a 12-part series, airs monthly
On the first Monday of every month, we tell the story of a Cape, Islands or SouthCoast community member who has passed away. Who were they? What did they stand for? How did they spend their time here? The series features regular Cape and Island residents and the impact they had on the lives of their families and neighbors. We welcome suggestions for potential sources from listeners.

“Permitted to Work”, a 3-part series, Spring/Early Summer, 2012
Do foreign workers play in our regional economy? Every summer thousands of foreign workers come to the Cape and Islands to fill jobs in the service industry. Businesses begin working through the approval process months earlier -- applying for visas, recruiting workers and coordinating their stays. But with the economy still struggling and unemployment high, some local workers, particularly on Martha’s Vineyard, question the appropriateness of hiring outside the local worker pool.

“Studying Libraries”, a 5-part series, Summer, 2012
A look at how local libraries are funded and valued in different commuities. And, as new technologies emerge and communities remain cash-starved, we ask: What do Cape Cod’s libraries look like, and what do they face in the future?

“Sense of the Census”, a 5-part series, Late Summer, 2012
With the help of the 2010 Census, we feature the stories of real people as we look at issues of race, class and access to health care on the Cape Cod and the Islands. A segment of the series also will explore the claims from some government officials who question the accuracy of the census-taking methodology in an area as unique as the Cape and Islands.

“Election 2012”, The Point with Mindy Todd, Fall, 2012
A series of election-related shows, including debates among candidates, both in the studio and at remote locations.

“Creative Life” -- An Arts and Culture Feature Series, Bi-Monthly
We continue Creative Life arts and culture series produced by Jay Allison. The series offers an audio tour of arts, culture, and inspiration on the Cape and Islands - a region rich with creative diversity, and so are the stories we tell.

“Sonic IDs” -- 50 sonics produced by Jay Allison at Atlantic Public Media
We continue to build our library of WCAI’s signature sound – snippets of the voices and sounds of our community. These vignettes are a popular programming element; known for their charm, whimsy, poignancy and relevancy.

Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game, July, 2012
We continue our annual airing of the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game, live from Fenway Park.
