Hurricane Earl
State and Federal officials are urging residents to prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Earl, currently a powerful Category 3 storm. The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for the Massachusetts coast from Westport to Hull, including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket.
Satellite and reconnaissance fixes show that, as anticipated, Earl has turned northward. Earl is expected to track within 40 miles south of Nantucket Friday night. Earl is expected to weaken to a Category 2 hurricane as it makes its approach to Nantucket. The Cape and Martha's Vineyard should expect winds 45 to 60 mph, with gusts up to 80 mph. On Nantucket gusts may reach 95 mph.
