The War
With the broadcast of the seven-part series by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, The War,
we put some feelers out into the community to explore the stories of local veterans and other individuals who have felt the impact of war. Here are some of those stories.
Theodore Akimoto, WWII Veteran, U.S. Army
Akimoto narrates images of Japan (8:53)
Japanese American Theodore Akimoto spent the first year of World War II in
an internment camp. An American citizen and a patriot, he was finally
allowed to enlist in the military at the end of the war. He served as a US Army photographer, documenting Japan after the surrender.

Silent Men Speaking
Written and performed by Carl Thomsen, Silent Men Speaking was created in 2004 from the oral history of three veterans of the war in Vietnam. The play follows their experiences before, during, and after the war. As some of the memories were difficult or impossible for the men to speak of, their memories are interwoven with dance, music, and poetry so that the unspeakable might also be given witness.
The author wishes to express deep appreciation to David Bianchini, Allen Gaskell, and Robert Vinson for freely sharing their stories so that others may heal from the trauma of war.
