A young photographer arrives in an impoverished rural community whose elder residents grow to trust her with their personal recollections. Critic Andrew Lapin says this minimalist Brazilian drama is a poignant, elegantly crafted still life.

The minimalist Brazilian drama Found Memories has a running gag, a small chuckle that gradually morphs into something profound: Madalena (Sonia Guedes), an elderly baker in a remote hillside town, walks her fresh goods to the local coffee shop every morning, where she removes the rolls from her basket and stacks them in a cabinet to be sold. The shop owner, Antonio (Luiz Serra), barks at her to stack the bread his way. But every morning, Madalena ignores him.

We laugh first at the inherent silliness of their argument; how can the manner in which the bread is stacked possibly matter? By the third time Madalena opens that cabinet door, we think the film's got nowhere else to go. But by the fifth time she boxes out Antonio's frustrated glare Guedes brings a uniquely enchanting stubbornness to her role we see it's more than some lame joke. It's the one moment of defiance she exerts in her otherwise hollow day, and by gum she's going to keep on doing it until she dies.

In her first feature-length film, director Julia Murat has crafted an elegant still life, with all the poignancy and observation implied. It's true that Found Memories is slow, but it would be more accurate to say the movie operates at the natural speed of that town, a ruminative amble that somehow, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, keeps moving forward. Coupled with Lucio Bonelli's lush cinematography, which relies on natural light and uncluttered compositions, the pacing somehow feels right.

The movie is set in Jotuomba, a fictional impoverished rural community in Brazil's Vale do Paraiba hit hard by the decline in the coffee trade. Its inhabitants are all senior remnants from an earlier era. There's little in the way of youth or modern technology, and the suggestion is that once these citizens pass on, no one will be left to remember what happened there.

Drifter photographer Rita (Lisa Favero) is the story's de facto catalyst. She arrives in town looking for inspiration and crashes with Madalena, converting a wing of the house into a darkroom. Rita's fascinated by old things and old people, but in an impartial, detached way that still allows her to listen to 21st-century music on her iPod. The interplay of life and death in this forgotten town is a mere novelty to her, one she plans to file away in her photo album next to her other travels.

Rita is several generations younger than everyone she meets in town, a key detail that Murat, with co-writers Maria Clara Escobar and Felipe Sholl, subtly exploit. She's fascinated by Madalena's daily bread-baking routine, for instance, and the way the villagers file neatly into church on Sundays; she snaps pictures of everyday details everyone else long ago lost interest in.

Oddly, though Rita seems set up to act as a free spirit for the town, she's largely just as stately and reserved as the rest. She communicates chiefly through her camera, which makes it hard to understand how she could impart any emotion more significant than bemusement to the townsfolk. Yet Madalena still feels a connection, perhaps due to her own fondness for still images she pulls out yellowing photos of her long-gone husband at night.

The feeling of twilight permeates Found Memories, which doesn't feel so much like a tale of discovery as it does a eulogy. (There's even a cemetery motif.) It's the difference between telling the story from Rita's point of view and telling it from Madalena's: A less confident filmmaker might have opted for the former, for fear the latter would be too depressing to ponder.

Even as it depicts a forgotten way of life, Found Memories is already on its way to becoming a relic itself, its glacial, meditative style an anachronism in the 21st century. The film finds its language in the rhythms of routine and the slow burn of deep realizations. Even as she seems to have lost her bearings, Madalena still traces abandoned railway tracks to the shop every morning at dawn, biding her time, bread basket in hand. (Recommended)
Copyright 2012 National Public Radio.

	April 19, 2012

BOSTON — This week, Boston Globe film critic Wesley Morris, 36, won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for criticism for his reviews of gems, garbage and everything in between. The Pulitzer panel said Morris' work was “smart, inventive and distinguished."

Two days after the official announcement, he was still happily stunned.

"It feels amazing but it hasn't quite sunken in — whatever it means, whatever it's supposed to mean, hasn't quite sunken in yet," he said.

That's even though he had an extra weekend to process: Globe editor Marty Baron called with the news on Friday, April 13. "[I] had to sit on it all weekend. I called my mother."

After a weekend of silence, Morris entered the newsroom Monday to acclaim. "Our copy desk, they knew and they applauded." He was determined to stay composed. But when the copy desk, the world's harshest critics, are happy for you … well. "Those are my favorite guys, they're the best, they have saved my life a number of times," Morris said, "— and I just started to cry."

Also proud: Morris' middle school social studies teacher, who emailed with congratulations. He assigned the tween his first movie review: "April Morning," a made-for-TV historical drama starring Tommy Lee Jones, Rip Torn, Chad Lowe and Meredith Salenger.

Young Morris came to a verdict, and argued his point in print: "It was really boring." The teacher liked the review and encouraged him to continue.

"I'm going to write him back and tell him he's responsible for this," Morris said.
BOSTON — What is it we all love about the movies? The power of the cinema to strike fear in our hearts, move us with longing, fill us with dread or prompt us to laugh is created from the incredible talent and dedication of its actors. These films don't fail to display the ferocity and tenderness of some of today's best.

We Need to Talk About Kevin
In theaters Friday

A suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller, Lynne Ramsay’s WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores the factious relationship between a mother and her son. Tilda Swinton, in a bracing performance, plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin (Ezra Miller). Dark and gripping, but completely worth the difficult ride.
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
In theaters Friday

In this quirky comedy, a visionary sheik (Amr Waked) has a big dream – to bring salmon fishing to the desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative (Emily Blunt) to turn his dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. Emily talked with Jared about the chemistry she found working with McGregor.
Presented by Boston Children's Theatre
At the Calderwood Pavilion through March 11th

The year is 1980 and Aaaron is gay. Being gay makes Aaron different. With that stigma, he is subjected daily to violence and rejection—leaving him feeling dejected and with thoughts of suicide. Rising from his despair, Aaron strikes back by suing his Rhode Island High School for the right to escort his boyfriend to the prom. By standing up for his personal and civil rihgt and for refusing to apologize for who he is, Aaron not only wins in court, but he also wins in the hearts and minds of his peers and his community. His strength and ultimate victory help pave the way for legions of gay and lesbian students.
BOSTON — More than 300 Downton Abbey fans came to One Guest Street last year to show their support of WGBH and enjoy An Evening Inspired by Downton Abbey. Partygoers came in costume and enjoyed food, fashion, and music from the Edwardian Era.

Susanne Simpson, senior producer at Masterpiece, welcomed guests, who learned about the styles of dress typical of the British aristocracy in the Edwardian era. Lasell College professors Lynn Blake, chair of the Fashion Department, and Jill Carey Arnow, professor and curator of the Lasell Fashion Collection spoke about that period in fashion and authentic dresses and accessories from the collection graced the WGBH atrium.

Massachusetts College of Art & Design students, wearing modern interpretations of Edwardian clothing, treated guests to a fashion show moderated by professor John Di Stefano.

To add to the fun, the New England Brass Band performed in WGBH’s Fraser studio.

BOSTON — Callie talks with Garen Daly, film critic, host and curator of the 37th annual, 10-day Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival. It’s an intergalactic, extra-terrestrial occasion where robots, vampires, aliens, and human imposters drop through the space-time continuum, blow up cars, dance and sing on the big screen.

Hear about fantasy and science fiction films that have come from all reaches of the universe--Bollywood, Estonia, and Maine--for a debut screening. One Daly is especially eager to present is PIG, Winner of the Best Feature at the London Sci-Fi Film Fest, Shreikfest and Schockerfest, the film is about a man who wakes up in the desert with no memory. A beautiful woman and her son nurse him back to health.

For those skeptics who wonder what a Sci-Fi film fest might have for them, Daly recommends the full experience of the 24-Hour Sci-Fi Marathon, from Feb. 19-20th. "Even if you don't stay for the whole thing," Daly says, "it's such a community of people...." Once a year, 600 people come together to enjoy this event.

BOSTON — Our fascination with vampires has been deep and enduring. From the poems of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Lord Byron to “Twilight” and “True Blood,” the vampire has been a popular muse for generations.

According to Harvard Extension lecturer Sue Weaver Schopf, over 1500 novels, 500 movies and hundreds more short stories and poems have featured vampires.

"It's the biggest cultural phenomenon of our time," Schopf said on “The Callie Crossley Show” on Dec. 14.

Schopf, who usually studies the 19th century, saw the trend and decided to design a course to encompass the breadth of vampire film and literature. She debuted the course, called "The Vampire in Literature and Film," last fall.

"One of the most remarkable things that we saw was that about 75 percent of the class was female," she said. "I think there's something there that really resonates with women."

Vampires also historically been stand-ins for difficult political and cultural issues, according to Schopf.

"They've become a kind of metaphor for immigration in a way, for any sort of disenfranchised group, who want to come into a normal group and assimilate, to be part of that group,” she said. Many authors draw on the idea of the vampire as outsider, “the person who is different, whom you fear, who you don't want to come into the community… that's become a very powerful way of talking about our current anxieties about things like immigration, or sexual difference, or racial difference, or racial hybridity. That's what really got me interested in these books."

Students have gotten interested, too. Hundreds have enrolled in Schopf's vampire course, which is taught simultaneously in the classroom and online at the Harvard Extension School website.

Kim McLarin takes in the new production of Porgy and Bess” at Cambridge’s American Repertory Theater with the question “Why now?” and finds a surprising answer in the company’s new version of the 75-year-old opera.

It is a truth not universally acknowledged that writers are always writing for somebody. Any writer with ego enough to desire publication has an audience in the conscious or subconscious mind during the act of creation. It is also true that this hovering audience shapes the creation as surely as the potter’s intended use for a pot shapes the clay. As Toni Morrison asked of the great novel “Invisible Man,” “Invisible to who?”

I had this thought while watching the excellent and moving adaptation of “Porgy and Bess” at the ART in Cambridge recently. According to the Playbill this production is “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess,” reportedly the title required by the Gershwin estate, but I am not so sure. The opera has been famously, and controversially, adapted by the playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and composer Diedre L. Murray and directed by Diane Paulus, and I, for one, am grateful. Were it strictly the Gershwins’ opera, I’m not sure I would have enjoyed it as much.

I can’t say for sure, though, because I’ve never seen "Porgy and Bess" before. Never wanted to.

I always assumed George Gershwin and his team created this grand American folk opera primarily for a white, early-twentieth century audience and that it therefore was unlikely to speak to me. What little I knew about the piece--the cringe-inducing lyrics by George Gershwin’s brother Ira and librettist DuBose Heyward (“I Got Plenty Of Nuthin’ ” “Bess, You Is My Woman Now”) layered atop the sublime music, the fact that Sidney Poitier had at first refused to star in the movie version, the character description of Bess as a loose drug addict and the depiction of Porgy as deformed--did little to change my mind. Even considering that it might have been bold for the original creative team to imagine the inner lives of black people in 1935 didn’t mean I wanted to see it. Just because a portrayal is sympathetic doesn’t mean it is not also a stereotype.

All of which is to say I arrived at the ART slightly skeptical. The first few songs—the sweet and famous lullaby “Summertime” and “A Woman Is A Sometime Thing”--did little to ease my worry. The crap game scene early in the first act--bare-armed black men gambling and courting violence--had me shifting in my seat.

But then the funeral scene hooked me. Here is the moment the production comes into full possession of itself. Here were people I recognized. Here was grieving and movement, gesture and sorrow, and song that I knew. Here was a witness to African-American life that felt deeply-rooted and authentic and true.

How important is such authenticity? To theatergoers who prize Gershwin’s transcendent score over all else, the African dance gestures and dead-on black church movements in the funeral scene may not mean much. Likewise, the set-up which gives context (and standard English) to Porgy’s “I Got Plenty of Nothing,” rescuing it from being a happy, darkey song may not greatly improve the work and the “excavation” of Bess’ character which Lori-Parks has spoken of doing may seem unnecessary or even presumptuous to some.

To me, though, these transformations allowed me to fully embrace a work I fear I may not have before. They also go a long way toward answering a question I had upon first reading about this production: Does the world really need an updated version of Porgy and Bess? Do black people?

The answer to both questions is yes. The world needs this production because Audra McDonald is a revelation. Even with Parks’ tweaking, the character of Bess still hovers at the edge of blurred, two-dimensionality but McDonald wrenches her into focus as a vulnerable and deeply flawed woman fighting hard to save herself in the only way she knows. As others have said, this is not only great singing but great acting too.

Black people need this production now because “Porgy and Bess” is a story of not only of black romantic love (which would be reason enough), but also of black community, and of the redemptive and transformative power of love.

Watching Norm Lewis’ crippled Porgy extend his hand to the beautiful Bess (and, yes, I’m glad they took him off of that damn goat cart) I tried to remember the last time we saw a story of a black man’s love for a black woman raising him to manhood and changing his life. When was that on the ART’s or any other local stage? (Heck, try to find, on broadcast or cable television right now, a black man with a black female love interest at all.) When was the last pop culture depiction that not only offered a black woman so valued and desirable that three men were willing to fight over her but, almost casually, also tossed the stories of two other solid and loving black couples into the mix?

And, yes, among a people still scarred, not only by the legacy of legalized racial oppression, but also by the present reality of racial caste and social control, manifest, among other ways, in mass incarceration of black men, any time is the right time for a story of a strong and vibrant black community.

It is not just Porgy who loves Bess. But the other characters who love as well: Clara who loves Jake, Serena who loves her husband, and Mariah and the fisherman and the preacher and the undertaker who love everyone. It is not just Porgy who will save Bess, if Bess is to be saved; it is the flawed but ultimately embracing and forgiving citizens of Catfish Row, who know that in loving and uplifting the least of them they are also saving themselves.
