IRA Charitable Rollover

IRA Holders Can Make Charitable Distributions in 2013

If you've been thinking about supporting WGBH, there's never been a better time. If you are 70 1/2 or older, you may transfer up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to WGBH and enjoy tax savings through a "Charitable IRA Rollover."

Here's how it works: Rather than taking all or a portion of your required minimum distribution from your IRA, which would be treated as taxable income, the law allows you to donate it to a qualified charity and does not treat it as taxable income.

  • For the 2013 tax year, between January 1 and December 31, 2013, you can make a direct distribution from your IRA to WGBH.

Transfers to donor-advised funds, private foundations, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable gift annuities do not qualify. There is no income tax deduction for the transfer.
