Citizen Tanouye

Students from Torrance, Calif. research the life and times of Technical Sergeant Ted Tanouye (1919–1944), an alumnus of their high school posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic service during World War II. Tanouye fought overseas — and was killed in the line of duty — while his family, and other American citizens of Japanese ancestry, were "relocated" to internment camps. Through their investigation of school yearbooks, newspapers, and the Internet and conversations with World War II veterans, the students learn about the war's impact on their city and discover the civil rights abuses of World War II-era America.
