Writing: The New Therapy?

Writing: The New Therapy?
Show and TellFor as long as anyone who has studied the craft of writing can remember, the cardinal rule of workshop has been: Writing is not therapy. “If you wanted to spend several hours a week baring your soul to a stranger who was obligated to listen and react, you went to (a shrink). But today, you (just) join a writing workshop.” At least that’s according to our beloved misanthrope Steve Almond. He joins us to discuss to evolving – or at least newly acknowledged – motivations of would-be writers.

Guest:
Steve Almond, our regular Show & Tell contributor, best selling author of seven books, including Rock And Roll Will Save Your Life

The Baffler Is Back
The self-described “journal that blunts the cutting edge” is back in print after a two-year hiatus. The Baffler’s latest issue of scathing media, political and cultural criticism hits newsstands tomorrow. And no cow is sacred. (Not even the one that pays its bills).

Guests:
John Summers, editor of The Baffler
Thomas Frank, journalist and author of books like What’s The Matter With Kansas? and most recently, Pity The Billionaire. Founding editor of The Baffler
