Week In Review

Week In Review: After a scathing report details the numerous institutional missteps that led to the death of a Woburn Police officer, Governor Deval Patrick vows to overhaul the state parole system and restore public confidence. The shooting rampage in Tucson that gravely injured a member of congress and left six people dead raises new questions about the tone of political rhetoric in America. We’ll also mark the somber first anniversaries of the Haiti earthquake and Phoebe Prince’s suicide; discuss Patrice Tierney’s jail sentence; and mull the 2012 senate candidacy of several new names. Plus, what’s your NEW sign? Thumbs up, thumbs down on the Zodiac changes, snow days, “tiger mothering” and a ban on smoking in public parks. All that and more today as we review this week in the news. I’m joined by Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen, The Boston Herald’s Dave Wedge and social critic and attorney Wendy Kaminer.

ABOUT THE EMILY ROONEY SHOW

Wednesday, March 14, 2012       Listen 897

The Great Back Bay Blackout
After a smoky electrical transformer fire knocked out power to about 21,000 homes and businesses, sections of the neighborhood are getting back online. But problems are expected to persist into tonight. We’ll have the latest.

Guests:
Garrett Quinn, WGBH contributor and author of the Less is More blog on Boston.com
Meg Mainzer-Cohen, president of the Back Bay Association
Marcia Gregg, a Back Bay resident who (along with her family) lost power (and still doesn’t have it)
David Jacobs, publisher and editor The Boston Courant, covers Back Bay, South End Beacon Hill and Fenway

The Baffler Is Back
The self-described “journal that blunts the cutting edge” is back in print after a two-year hiatus. The Baffler’s latest issue of scathing media, political and cultural criticism hits newsstands tomorrow. And no cow is sacred. (Not even the one that pays its bills).

Guests:
John Summers, editor of The Baffler
Thomas Frank, journalist and author of books like What’s The Matter With Kansas? and most recently, Pity The Billionaire. Founding editor of The Baffler
