Week In Review

Week In Review: Amid findings of rampant fraud and “systematic corruption” by an independent counsel, the Supreme Judicial Court has ordered an overhaul of the state’s probation department. Governor Deval Patrick lays out priorities for his second term and critics pounce on one controversial line item: in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. Nationally, a divided congress returns, John Boehner and Nancy Pelosi keep their positions but switch roles and Charlie Rangal begs for mercy. Plus, Scott Brown files a bill to modify national health care and a New York Times Magazine cover story confirms what some might call the obvious: Sarah Palin is considering a run for the White House. And finally - the “end of days” for Fourloko, NPR “nazis”, a royal wedding and thumbs up, thumbs down on people and places in the news this week. The Boston Herald’s Dave Wedge and The Boston Globe’s Joanna Weiss and Adrian Walker join us to chew over this week in the news.

ABOUT THE EMILY ROONEY SHOW

Wednesday, March 14, 2012       Listen 897

The Great Back Bay Blackout
After a smoky electrical transformer fire knocked out power to about 21,000 homes and businesses, sections of the neighborhood are getting back online. But problems are expected to persist into tonight. We’ll have the latest.

Guests:
Garrett Quinn, WGBH contributor and author of the Less is More blog on Boston.com
Meg Mainzer-Cohen, president of the Back Bay Association
Marcia Gregg, a Back Bay resident who (along with her family) lost power (and still doesn’t have it)
David Jacobs, publisher and editor The Boston Courant, covers Back Bay, South End Beacon Hill and Fenway

The Baffler Is Back
The self-described “journal that blunts the cutting edge” is back in print after a two-year hiatus. The Baffler’s latest issue of scathing media, political and cultural criticism hits newsstands tomorrow. And no cow is sacred. (Not even the one that pays its bills).

Guests:
John Summers, editor of The Baffler
Thomas Frank, journalist and author of books like What’s The Matter With Kansas? and most recently, Pity The Billionaire. Founding editor of The Baffler
