Basic Black Live: A Conversation on Black Masculinity

(Originally broadcast May 13, 2010)  An exploration on the meaning of “black masculinity”. How have the stereotypes changed or remained the same? For example, at one time, “acting white” usually meant effeminate; today, “acting white” can mean the path to the US Presidency. Last weekend, an honor roll eighth grader who was thought by many to have a bright future was shot to death on a Roxbury basketball court. In an environment of promise and peril, what does “black masculinity” mean to the current and coming generations of young black men? Our panel: Callie Crossley, host of The Callie Crossley Show on WGBH Radio; Latoyia Edwards, anchor, New England Cable News; Peter Roby, Athletic Director, Northeastern University; C. Shawn McGuffey, assistant professor of sociology, Boston College; and Rev. Brandon Crowley, Myrtle Street Baptist Church, Newton, MA.

Basic Black returns October 21, 2010 with live broadcasts and a panel of the region’s sharpest observers of the current news, events, and topics impacting black communities locally and nationally. A simultaneous live stream at www.basicblack.org gives viewers the opportunity to submit comments and questions in real time during the broadcast.
