Habitat For Humanity CEO On Affordable Housing
Jonathan ReckfordWith operations from Cape Cod to Calcutta – the specific needs vary – but the objective is the same: eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Founded in 1976, the non-profit Habitat for Humanity International has helped build nearly 500,000 decent, affordable houses and served more than two million people around the world. But despite its wide reach and high profile membership (Brad Pitt, Jimmy Carter, etc.) – my next guest says more needs to be done to raise awareness and “create a compelling common narrative that demonstrates how shelter issues affect everyone.” Jonathan Reckford, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, is in Boston today to give a lecture at Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies – and he joins me now.

ABOUT THE EMILY ROONEY SHOW

Wednesday, March 14, 2012       Listen 897

The Great Back Bay Blackout
After a smoky electrical transformer fire knocked out power to about 21,000 homes and businesses, sections of the neighborhood are getting back online. But problems are expected to persist into tonight. We’ll have the latest.

Guests:
Garrett Quinn, WGBH contributor and author of the Less is More blog on Boston.com
Meg Mainzer-Cohen, president of the Back Bay Association
Marcia Gregg, a Back Bay resident who (along with her family) lost power (and still doesn’t have it)
David Jacobs, publisher and editor The Boston Courant, covers Back Bay, South End Beacon Hill and Fenway

The Baffler Is Back
The self-described “journal that blunts the cutting edge” is back in print after a two-year hiatus. The Baffler’s latest issue of scathing media, political and cultural criticism hits newsstands tomorrow. And no cow is sacred. (Not even the one that pays its bills).

Guests:
John Summers, editor of The Baffler
Thomas Frank, journalist and author of books like What’s The Matter With Kansas? and most recently, Pity The Billionaire. Founding editor of The Baffler
