In Defense Of William Bulger
The recent arrest of James “Whitey” Bulger has stirred up a flurry of media coverage, much of it involving the alleged mobster’s brother, former state Senate president and University of Massachusetts president William Bulger. One report referred to the former civic leader’s “greatly diminished reputation.” But in a recent essay in Commonwealth Magazine, Maurice Cunningham asks– apart from being a blood relative of Whitey – what has William Bulger done to deserve the supposed “greatly diminished reputation"?
