On the surface – the battle over the nation’s debt limit continues to rage in Washington. But at the core of the debate, lies something far deeper than dollars and cents: a fundamental difference of opinion about the size and role of government. Then, in the wake of a sweeping phone hacking scandal, the hits keep on coming for News Corp. As Rupert Murdoch’s loyal lieutenant Rebekah Brooks resigns her post as the head of the company’s British newspaper division. And speaking of departing chiefs, Massachusetts’ embattled transportation secretary says he’ll resign his post by year’s end. In addition to being under fire for ongoing problems associated with the big dig, The Boston Globe reports Jeffrey Mullan was unsatisfied with his salary.
