Where Have All the Lifeguards Gone?
Citing the down economy, the Cape Cod town of Bourne is not hiring any lifeguards for their beaches this summer. The move, approved by town voters in May, saves the town about $75 thousand dollars. We’ll check in with Donald Pickard, the chairman of the Bourne Board of Selectmen, who says the town didn’t have a choice and Chris Brewster, the president of the United States Lifesaving Association, who argues that protecting beaches is as important a public safety service as any.
