Oscar Recap

Oscar Recap
James Franco and Anne HathawayLast night Hollywood got all dolled up and celebrated the best and brightest in the film industry during the 83rd annual Academy Awards. What started in 1929 as a private ceremony for 270 people has grown into the undisputed granddaddy of awards shows and must-see TV for millions of viewers. But for all its glitz and glamour the Oscars are essentially a party. And as it is with all good parties, the recap is as much fun—if not more fun—than the actual event. And there is plenty to recap from last night—from Melissa Leo’s f-bomb to Cate Blanchet's divisive dress. And of course there were the controversial hosts, the youngest in Oscar history. How did they fare? WGBH’s Jared Bowen and longtime arts & entertainment reporter Joyce Kulhawik join us to help me break down Hollywood’s biggest night.

ABOUT THE EMILY ROONEY SHOW

Wednesday, March 14, 2012       Listen 897

The Great Back Bay Blackout
After a smoky electrical transformer fire knocked out power to about 21,000 homes and businesses, sections of the neighborhood are getting back online. But problems are expected to persist into tonight. We’ll have the latest.

Guests:
Garrett Quinn, WGBH contributor and author of the Less is More blog on Boston.com
Meg Mainzer-Cohen, president of the Back Bay Association
Marcia Gregg, a Back Bay resident who (along with her family) lost power (and still doesn’t have it)
David Jacobs, publisher and editor The Boston Courant, covers Back Bay, South End Beacon Hill and Fenway

The Baffler Is Back
The self-described “journal that blunts the cutting edge” is back in print after a two-year hiatus. The Baffler’s latest issue of scathing media, political and cultural criticism hits newsstands tomorrow. And no cow is sacred. (Not even the one that pays its bills).

Guests:
John Summers, editor of The Baffler
Thomas Frank, journalist and author of books like What’s The Matter With Kansas? and most recently, Pity The Billionaire. Founding editor of The Baffler
