The Church of Scientology is no stranger to controversy and now the FBI is reportedly investigating the church on suspicions of human trafficking and allegations of “abusive behavior and gross misconduct.” Details about the probe are unveiled in this week’s New Yorker Magazine. Staff writer Lawrence Wright has the story of Hollywood writer/director and ex-scientologist Paul Haggis’ high-profile defection from the church and the reasons behind it. Haggis tells Wright, “I was in a cult for 34 years. Everyone else could see it, I don’t know why I couldn’t.” The church in response has called Haggis an “apostate” and say they know nothing about an FBI investigation. We’re joined by Russ Baker, an investigative journalist who has covered Scientology and is the editor of the news website WhoWhatWhy.com.
