"Pops" Goes The Season

"Pops" Goes The Season: The holidays in Boston are full of traditions but perhaps none is more cherished than the Holiday Pops. Each December, Symphony Hall comes alive with the seasonal sounds of the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Tanglewood festival chorus. This year there will be 37 performances in all—with special guests ranging from Jim Dale - the voice of the Harry Potter audio books to Santa Claus himself. But the Holiday Pops season is kicking off in grand style this Saturday, and conductor Keith Lockart needs your help. Keith and the Boston Pops are inviting members of the public to join them in a Holiday sing-along as they attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest group of carolers gathered in the same place at the same time. Keith  joins us to talk more about that and this year’s exciting Holiday Pops season.

ABOUT THE EMILY ROONEY SHOW

Wednesday, March 14, 2012       Listen 897

The Great Back Bay Blackout
After a smoky electrical transformer fire knocked out power to about 21,000 homes and businesses, sections of the neighborhood are getting back online. But problems are expected to persist into tonight. We’ll have the latest.

Guests:
Garrett Quinn, WGBH contributor and author of the Less is More blog on Boston.com
Meg Mainzer-Cohen, president of the Back Bay Association
Marcia Gregg, a Back Bay resident who (along with her family) lost power (and still doesn’t have it)
David Jacobs, publisher and editor The Boston Courant, covers Back Bay, South End Beacon Hill and Fenway

The Baffler Is Back
The self-described “journal that blunts the cutting edge” is back in print after a two-year hiatus. The Baffler’s latest issue of scathing media, political and cultural criticism hits newsstands tomorrow. And no cow is sacred. (Not even the one that pays its bills).

Guests:
John Summers, editor of The Baffler
Thomas Frank, journalist and author of books like What’s The Matter With Kansas? and most recently, Pity The Billionaire. Founding editor of The Baffler
