The Emily Rooney Show 8/26/10
Teaching Teachers About Cultural Diversity: Sociedad Latina, a Roxbury community youth organization, has launched a campaign to persuade city leaders to provide teachers with more cultural training. They argue that when students feel unwelcome, out of place or misunderstood they’re more likely to lose their focus, perform poorly in school and even drop out. We’re joined by Nicole d’Avis, a program director at Sociedad Latina and Chantal Soloman, who will be a sophomore at Boston Community Leadership Academy this fall.
HomeworkSpotlight On Education - Affirmative Action In Education: We’ll discuss the merits and pitfalls of affirmative action, its broader implications in the admissions process, and the untold story of those not just being excluded – but indirectly penalized in the process. We’re joined by Dan Golden, author of The Price of Admission; Harvey Mansfield, a political philosophy and government professor at Harvard University; Oiyan A. Poon, a research associate at UMass Boston’s Institute for Asian American Studies; and Harvard Law School Professor Lani Guinier.
