On Weds Emily suggested that the State Hospital Assosciations decision to ban hiring smokers was likely done to set a health example. This is just plan wrong, as is the analogy to hiring or not other unhealthy groups. Since hospitals now require employees to be at least 500 ft from the PROPERTY not just the building when they smoke, the issue is a significant cost to the hospital in terms of productivity because of lost work time for smoke breaks. I happen to agree that we tend to gang up on smokers and ignore the equally hazardous but equally freechoice acts of overeating or speeding... but those dont affect your hours on the clock.

As the temperatures drop, we winterize our wardrobes, but how about our minds? Today: psychological advice for surviving the cold weather. And amid a recent decision by the State Hospital Association to no longer hire people who use tobacco, we’ll discuss the increasing demonization of smokers. Our regular Social Studies feature with Robin Abrahams tackles those topics and more.
