I guess I can see why a gadget geek journalist who is paid to always be moving on to the next big thing would have difficulty thinking of buying a standalone GPS. However, if you are content with doing your gossiping on your home phone, as I am, and are happy surfing the web on your laptop over WiFi and dont spend all your pedestrian minutes looking down at smartphone apps you might enjoy having a stand alone GPS. I recently bought a TomTom VIA 1405TM which includes free traffic and map updates. Unlike a smartphone it comes with no monthly toll charge. It does what I need it to do namely getting me where I want to go and alerting me to enroute traffic delays. Full disclosure I do have a paygo mobile phone for occasional away calls which costs me about $80 per year.
