MFA Celebrates Aphrodite In A New, First-Of-Its-Kind Exhibit
Ancient worshipers traveled to Mount Olympus in Greece or to temples in Cyprus to pay homage to the goddess of love and beauty. But fortunately - if you live in or around Boston, you won’t have to go very far to enjoy Aphrodite’s beguiling divinity. Starting tomorrow - through mid February - the first exhibition of classical works devoted solely to Aphrodite and her realm - will be on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Aphrodite and the Gods of Love, is an exhibition of 160 objects drawn from the MFA’s collection and 13 important loans - including the spectacular Sleeping Hermaphrodite, which has left Italy only once. Joining me now to talk more about the show - and about celebrating the first female nude in western art history - is Christine Kondoleon, the MFA’s senior curator of Greek and Roman Art.
