Boston Archdiocese Prepares For Sale Of Six Area Churches, Parishioners Prepare For New Appeal To The Pope:
Last week, Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley issued a decree, which takes effect today, that would strip six church buildings of their religious classification and pave the way for their sale. Parishioners at the churches the Boston Archdiocese wants to sell have been holding vigil at the closed churches for as many as seven years, since they were closed and had their priests removed. Today all six churches will send letters to O’Malley, kicking off an appeals process expected to last two to three years. Previous appeals to the Vatican to reopen the churches were rejected in early 2010. So why do these parishioners continue to fight? With us to explain is Suzanne Hurley, a member of the council of parishes and spokesperson for the parishioners at St. James the Great in Wellesley, MA.
