A few thoughts... We need a Guide to Problematical Library Use that includes hints, tips, pointers about library usability, library navigability, how to use library services, who at the library are specialists in varied fields, who at the library have expertise in particular areas of interest, who are the curators, what other library users have similar interests, etc. Navigating our Boston Public Library buildings, floors, departments, curatorial staff has been problematical. Floor by floor directories are needed on site and on the web for Boston Public Library buildings making the library easier to navigate. Boston Public Library could be a Teaching Library in the same sense we have Teaching Hospitals. BPL library staff could get credit for professional advanced study on site. Public library and information studies programs could be offered at University of Massachusetts Boston and/or Northeastern as an alternative to the overpriced tuition for local Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Simmons GSLIS comes up short on student financial assistance. In our region the best academic program in library and information studies is at University at Albany http//www.albany.edu/graduate/cci_graduate_programs.php
WAYH About The Future Of Libraries
The entire backfile of The New York Times is available online. That’s more than 13-million articles written from 1851 until today. A quick Google search on many topics will return you more results that you could read in a year. War and Peace can be downloaded in minutes…even seconds. So do we still need libraries? My next guests say we do. Here to discuss why and how libraries might be re-imagined in the future are Amy Patee, Associate Professor of Library Science at Simmons College and Susan Flannery, Director of the Cambridge Public Library.
